This itinerary lets visitors discover the historical site of Murten and the charming wine-growing villages of the Vully.
Murten/Morat - Mont Vully - Murten/Morat

The tour (local tour No. 480) begins in the medieval town of Murten, founded by the Zähringen, with its historic Old Town of national importance and numerous arcades. The ramparts encircling the town were built between the 13th and 17th centuries and are one of the best-preserved fortifications in Switzerland.

The route runs clockwise around Lake Murten. It follows quiet little country roads towards Faoug. After a few kilometres you will reach Salavaux, home to one of Switzerland's longest sandy beaches.

The route now runs uphill through a series of vineyards to Mont Vully. The hills to the north of Lake Murten offer a magnificent view of the Alps and Jura - as well as a rich historical heritage. Around 58 BC, the Celtic Helvetians built an oppidum here whose ramparts can still be seen today. More recent features include the defensive positions established by the Swiss Army during the First World War from 1914. After a rapid descent, the route runs through the Chablais, a huge woodland along the Seeland also known as the largest vegetable garden in Switzerland, before finally leading back to Murten.

Highlight: town walls of Murten, that are open to the public and offer a beautiful view on the city and Lake Murten
