You will lose track of time as you walk along this peaceful route, which combines forest paths and river banks.

The walk starts in Grangeneuve, home to the canton of Fribourg’s Agricultural Institute since 1888. The “Grange Neuve” (“New Barn”) was built in the 13th century by monks from the neighbouring Hauterive Abbey, with the aim of increasing the area of land suitable for cultivation. Take the undulating forest path along the left bank, which follows the course of the Sarine river as far as the Tuffière bridge. As you head towards “Les Prés d’en Bas”, you will come close to the river and cliffs, where you can appreciate the tranquillity of the place. In wet weather, take the upper path, which is safer and protected from flooding. Further on, you will find a few benches and a picnic area at the spot known as the “Pré du Moulin”. Note the impressive impact of the water on the rocks as you cross the bridge. Here, the path overlooks the Sarine and offers some fine views over its twists and turns. It then drops down to La Souche farm via a path cut into the molasse. Opposite you is the Cistercian Abbey of Hauterive, which was founded in the 12th century by a local lord. From the Abbey, you can join the Agricultural Institute of Grangeneuve and complete the tour.

Tip: local Fribourg products can be purchased from the shops at the agricultural college in Grangeneuve and at the Abbey.
